In its simplest definition, ecological impact assessment is a formal process of defining, quantifying and evaluating the potential impacts of defined actions on ecological systems. It therefore requires identification of environmental components and understanding of the factors or processes which determine their interactions with each other, so that impacts of specific activities can be superimposed on baseline conditions and their potential effects forecasted (Treweek, 1995).

In the present study, a two pronged approach was adopted for generating robust and reliable database on the ecological and biological aspects of the area in question and also for developing an adequate understanding of the environmental changes that the project is likely to trigger
