Master's Course in Heritage Conservation and Management

Responding to the critical need for advancing heritage education, the WII-Category 2 Centre (WII-C2C) on World Natural Heritage Management and Training for Asia and the Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO introduced a 2-year residential Master’s Course in Heritage Conservation and Management in July, 2019.
Background

The WII-C2C was established in 2015 to realize the objectives of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, 1972 by building capacity of World Heritage professionals through training, research and information dissemination. The Centre has conducted numerous thematic capacity building and outreach programmes on world heritage conservation. This includes disaster risk reduction, culture-nature linkages, ecotourism, justice and sustainability and outstanding universal value (OUV) analysis in collaboration with technical and educational institutions both in India and abroad.

Affiliated to AcSIR, the course is interdisciplinary in nature and includes theoretical and methodological integration of ecological sciences and heritage studies. Thematic workshops and field engagement with world heritage sites will be key highlights.

 

Salient Features

  • Taught modules, thematic workshops, electives, and fieldwork covering fundamental and applied heritage conservation;
  • Taught courses covering themes of fundamentals of heritage conservation; biodiversity and natural heritage; anthropological and archaeological dimensions of heritage; research methods; heritage governance and site management; sustainable tourism and visitor management; heritage impact assessment; World Heritage among others;
  • Skill development of students by co-curation of events and workshops on various discourses of heritage;
  • Independent Master’s thesis for a comprehensive research;
  • Focused on building critical thinking and professional skills in students

Excursions

Targeted at introducing the students to the broad aspects of heritage conservation and management, the students will visit various natural and cultural heritage sites and landscapes to learn about requisite field techniques and field craft. Excursions to iconic UNESCO World Heritage sites, Protected Areas, Museums and other heritage sites will expose the students to salient features, intrinsic values, and management challenges of the properties.

 

Dissertation

Reflecting class-room learning in a real-life working environment, the students would get an opportunity to research in their field of interest through Master Degree dissertation in the fourth semester.

Course Admission & Eligibility
  • Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University
  • Minimum of 15 years of formal education (either 10+2+3 or 11+2+2).
  • Candidates who have appeared OR will be appearing at the qualifying (Final) bachelor’s degree examination and whose result is still awaited may also apply

Our graduates will embark on careers in the inter-disciplinary field of heritage conservation. The students will gain essential knowledge and skills to carry out independent research and conservation projects across heritage sites and properties. Potential employers include international organisations, national agencies, and private sector in the field of heritage conservation and management.
