Mr. Saurav Gawan (Project Scientist)     E-mail:- sauravgawan[at]wii[dot]gov[dot]in

Mr. Saurav Gawan is a young aspiring Turtle Conservationist from India. He has made immense contributions to the conservation of freshwater species in the country, with a special focus on turtles, since 2013. He completed his masters in Environment and Development from the Bharat Ratna Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University, Delhi. His work profile also includes community engagement covering diverse aspects of conservation. Being an intensive field researcher from a developing nation, he closely understands the struggles and difficulties pertaining to conservation in a region with a dense population that is heavily dependent on natural resources. The daily struggles of these marginalized communities have motivated and inspired him to work towards a sustainable conservation goal. He has collaborated with many international and national organizations in efforts to protect India's aquatic reptiles. Additionally, he has conducted surveys in more than 12 critical river ecosystems of India. He worked with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) under the National Mission for Clean Ganga project, focusing on the conservation and protection of India's endangered reptilian species in the Ganga River basin. One of his notable contributions is the publication of "Macro Fauna of Ganga River," which is the first-ever book on the freshwater species of the Ganga River, with a special emphasis on turtles. Moreover, he has played a significant role in the study and assessment of the wildlife value for the extension of the Wildlife Sanctuary for turtle conservation in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. This assessment has given hope to conservationists that serious actions are being taken to secure the future of these vulnerable species. Mr. Saurav Gawan is also a member of many IUCN (World Conservation Union)/SSC (Species Survival Commission) specialist groups, namely Tortoises and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group & Red List Group (TFTSG), World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), CEESP Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group (SULi), and Commission on Education and Communication (CEC).

Ms. Anjana Sharma hails from Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. She completed her post-graduation (MSc. Botany) in 2011 from Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Botany. She has 08 years of experience in research with specialization in biodiversity conservation and management. She has worked as an Assistant Project Coordinator at the Society for Technology and Development, Core Support funded project by DST. She was also a Junior Research Fellow at the G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, Himachal Regional Centre, Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, in the Indian Himalayas Climate Adaptation Program of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (IHCAP-SDC) funded project entitled "Community Perceptions and Vulnerability Assessment of Biodiversity and Natural Ecosystem in selected sites of Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh".

Additionally, she has served as a Senior Project Fellow at the G. B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, Himachal Regional Centre, Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, in an HPFD-funded project "Environmental Management Framework for World Bank Supported Himachal for Prosperity Project". She also worked as a Junior Project Fellow and later as a Senior Project Fellow at the G. B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, Himachal Regional Centre, Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, in a National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS) funded project "Microbial Endophytes and Soil Enzymes as Indicators of Climate Resilience with Respect to Himalayan Birch: A Critically Endangered Timber Line Species". She also had the opportunity to work as a Project Associate-I in CSIR, Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, under "CSIR Aroma Mission Phase-II".

Ms. Sneha Sharma was born and brought up in New Delhi. She holds master's degree in environmental science. For completion of master’s degree she analyzed the generation, composition and management of municipal solid waste along the mountain region of Uttarakhand due to high tourist flux for master's dissertation. She did a diploma in environmental management, during which she worked on the economic valuation of high-altitude lakes in Uttarakhand for her dissertation. She has work experience on ecosystem services of forests in India, community-based conservation, social assessments, gender & nutrition aspects of women in the Himalayan region and water quality assessment.

Her interest in community-based conservation led her to the Wildlife Institute of India, where she worked on the assessment of ALDFG (Abandoned, Lost, or Discarded Fishing Gear) and Recycling of waste fishing nets along the Ganga River. Presently, she is working on the community-based ecosystem management and sustainable resource utilization for the conservation of the Ganga River, along with empowering the local communities that sustain these efforts under the NMCG initiative-"Jalaj: Connecting River and People to Realize Arth Ganga".

Ms. Richa Dubey completed her graduation in Commerce (Hons.) from the Faculty of Commerce, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. She did her Master's in Public Administration with a specialization in international organization from the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. Simultaneously, she also completed her "O" level from DOEACC Society (now known as NIELIT). She has qualified the UGC-NET (Assistant Professorship) certificate in Public Administration. Previously, she worked as an education counselor for Collegedunia, a search engine providing information about higher education in India. She has also worked at SMARTCOACH, a civil service coaching institute, as a content developer (public administration). She joined the Wildlife Institute of India as a Database Assistant in the project “Jalaj: Connecting Rivers and People to Realize Arth Ganga”.

Mousumi Majumdar, originally from West Bengal, has built a strong academic foundation in geography and remote sensing. She completed her undergraduate studies in Geography (Honours) from Delhi University, followed by M.Sc. in Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing from Amity University, Noida. Her academic journey includes a summer internship at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, where she gained hands-on experience in geospatial research. Further refining her expertise, she completed her dissertation at the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), ISRO, in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. With a keen interest in spatial analysis and remote sensing technologies, Mousumi aspires to contribute to advancements in geoinformatics and environmental research. She is currently working in the Wildlife Institute of India as a Project Associate in the Jalaj project.

A nature enthusiast and a coder, Mr. Prashant was born in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. He completed his Bachelors and Masters of Science in Information Technology. He started his professional career as a User Interface Developer for websites. He has an experience in project coordination in business operations. He has interest lies in designing and he is exploring the field of UI/UX design. He undertook a Certificate Course in Wildlife Management Using Geospatial Techniques (Level 6 of NSQF) for a month, offered by ENVIS Resource Partner, Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, as a part of the Green Skill Development Programme of the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, Government of India. Following which he started working the IT-RS GIS cell as mapping and technical support at WII. Currently, he is working as a website and product designer in the NMCG-WII Project -Jalaj: Connecting River and People to Realise Arth Ganga.

Gaurav is from Dehradun, Uttarakhand, and holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Applications (BCA) from Graphic Era Hill University, Dehradun. From 2020 to 2024, he worked as a Website Designer and Front-End Developer at 89itworld in Dehradun. He served as a MERN Stack Developer at Farebulk Travel from May 2024 to December 2024. Currently, he is working as a Project Assistant in the Jalaj Project.

Mr. Aman Uniyal belongs to Dehradun, Uttarakhand. He completed his Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts from Graphic Era Hill University, Dehradun. He is passionate on capturing nature and natural beings through his art. He had the opportunity to work as an illustrator, graphic designer and mural artist for the Wildlife Institute of India in the NMCG-WII project during his internship. This experience refined his skills as a graphic designer. Presently, he is working with the Wildlife Institute of India under the Jalaj Project entitled "Connecting River and People to Realize Arth Ganga" as an Assistant Coordinator-Graphic Design and Illustrator to create visually appealing designs that create mass awareness on aquatic species conservation.

Swati Saha is a dedicated wildlife researcher currently serving as a Project Associate-I under the Jalaj Project at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun. With a strong academic foundation in Zoology, Swati holds a master’s degree from Serampore College and a bachelor’s degree from Dr. Kanailal Bhattacharya College. Her professional journey in wildlife conservation began with hands-on experience as a Research Assistant at Garchumuk Zoo in West Bengal, where she worked on the effect of limnological parameters on stocking density of freshwater soft-shelled turtles, their behavioral observation, market surveys for illegal trade, and public education programs. Since joining the Wildlife Institute of India in 2023, Swati has been actively involved in EIA on wildlife habitat in the Northern Western Ghat, aquatic biodiversity monitoring, and community engagement initiatives across the Ganga River basin in India. Her work under the Jalaj Project reflects her passion for conservation, focusing on integrating scientific research and grassroots-level awareness to promote sustainable management of freshwater habitats.

Ms. Shivangi belongs to Dehradun, Uttrakhand. She completed graduation (B.Com.) in 2015 from Choudhary Charan Singh University. She joined the TRW Sun Steering Wheels Pvt. Ltd. in Gurugram, Delhi-NCR, as a supervisor for three years. She has volunteered with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) as a Ganga Prahari in the project ‘Biodiversity Conservation and Ganga Rejuvenation’. Presently, she is working as the Jalaj Assistant Coordinator in Jalaj project.

 

Ms. Shalini Negi (Project Assistant - Jalaj Coordinator)     Email: shalininn [at] wii [dot] gov[dot] in

Shalini Negi holds a Master's degree in Environmental Science with a specialization in her dissertation on the terrestrial biodiversity of Chhinka village, Chamoli, Uttarakhand, and shows a commitment to environmental research and conservation. Building upon her academic foundation, she has garnered valuable teaching experience in the field of environmental science, with a particular emphasis on mountain ecology and traditional ecological knowledge. Additionally, her proficiency extends to the fundamentals of forestry. Afterward, working in community engagement and vocational training, she served as a supervisor at the Amrita Puri campus, overseeing initiatives aimed at enhancing regional products and skill development. This role underscores her ability to foster collaborative partnerships and empower local communities through education and training programs. In 2023, she embarked on a pivotal journey with the NMCG-Jalaj project of the Wildlife Institute of India. Initially, she joined as an intern, but through her experience and learnings in the project, she has ascended to the role of Jalaj Assistant Coordinator, where she contributes as a content writer adept at articulating scientific concepts for publication.

Deepti Pandey, hailing from Dehradun, Uttarakhand, holds a post-graduation degree in M. Com from Uttarakhand Open University (UOU). With 16 months of experience as an Accounts Manager at MD SERVICES and 4 months as a Project Assistant at Forest Research Institute, she also served 6 months as a data entry operator at Joint Implementation Opportunities (JIO) and 7 months as a field assistant in the NMCG-WII Project, focusing on planning and management for aquatic species conservation in the Ganga River basin. Currently, she works at the Wildlife Institute of India as an Assistant Coordinator for fieldwork, supporting Dean/Dean staff and Jalaj personnel in the project "Jalaj-connecting river and people to realize Arth Ganga."

Susmita Panggam hails from Arunachal Pradesh, the “Land of Dawn-lit Mountains.” She holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Forestry from a Dehradun-based college affiliated with Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna University.Her journey in wildlife research began in 2021 as an intern in Wildlife Institute of India in Kanha Project, where she gained hands-on experience in field research and conservation. She then worked as a Technical Assistant in NTCA-Funded All India Tiger Estimation Project. Her contributions included sign surveys, camera trapping in Kanha Tiger Reserve and Camera Trap Distance Sampling (CTDS) for the Elephant Census in Satkosia Tiger Reserve. She was also engaged in genetic walks for sample collection, further strengthening her expertise in wildlife monitoring. Beyond field research, Miss Susmita has actively contributed to community-based socio-economic surveys, which formed the core of her dissertation work. Her passion for integrating conservation with community engagement led her to take on the role of Project Assistant Coordinator for Jalaj: Connecting River and People to Realize Arth Ganga. In this capacity, she works towards fostering sustainable river conservation through local community participation.

Ankit Negi, a native of Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, holds a Master’s degree in Biotechnology from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University (HNBGU) and a Doctorate in Biotechnology from Kumaun University, Nainital. His doctoral research focused on the antibacterial activity of medicinal plants against Salmonella typhi, employing both experimental and computational approaches to address the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance. He has also worked as a Young Professional-I at the Uttarakhand Council of Biotechnology, contributing to essential oil isolation, bioactivity screening, and plant-based product development. Growing up in a farming family that relies on the local river for agriculture, he possesses a deep-rooted understanding of the ecological and livelihood significance of freshwater ecosystems. Currently Ankit is serving as a Project Assistant at the Wildlife Institute of India under the Jalaj initiative.

Payal Aswal belongs to Dehradun, Uttarakhand. She completed her Bachelor of Arts from Uttarakhand Open University. She has worked with the Universal Logistics as Accounts Intern for one year. She has volunteered with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) as a Ganga Prahari in the project ‘Biodiversity Conservation and Ganga Rejuvenation’. She has also worked as Field Assistant in the Jalaj project. Presently, she is working as the Project Assistant in Jalaj project.

Diksha Kharwal was born and raised in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh. She graduated from CSK Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Palampur, with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Hons.) and a Master of Science in Entomology. She studied the prevalence of lepidopteran pests infesting maize crops by surveying various Himachal Pradesh zones for her master's thesis. She loves to travel, paint, read and explore the outdoors since she has a strong affinity for nature, ecology and invertebrates. Working closely with farmers to address agricultural and socioeconomic concerns throughout her academic years marked the beginning of her research and community engagement adventure. Later, she worked as a Project Assistant for the CSIR Floriculture Mission Phase II at the CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology in Palampur. She is currently employed with the Wildlife Institute of India as a Project Assistant for the "Jalaj" initiative.

Swati Chandola is an enthusiastic environmentalist with a diverse academic and professional background. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology, followed by a Master of Science in Environmental Science. Her Master's dissertation focused on the "Valorisation of Invasive Weed Biomass for the Treatment of Hospital Wastewater," a project exploring sustainable solutions to environmental challenges. Swati's professional experience includes working as a Technical Assistant for the All India Tiger Estimation project at the Wildlife Institute of India, where she played a key role in camera trap data processing, handling, Camera Trap Distance Sampling (CTDS), and sample collection for the elephant census. Additionally, she contributed to the Reintroduction of Gaur project in the Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve, where her responsibilities encompassed field surveys, social feasibility assessments, and report writing. Currently, Swati is involved as a Project Assistant in the project, "Jalaj: Connecting River and People to Realize Arth Ganga" initiative, which aims to promote conservation through community engagement and provide alternative livelihoods for people dependent on the Ganga River.

Shivani is a biotechnologist with a strong academic and research background in life sciences. She hold both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biotechnology, with specialized training and research in molecular biology and plant biochemistry. She completed a research training program at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata, where her work focused on cancer biology—particularly the role of oncogenes in cancer cell development. For her Master’s dissertation, she conducted research at CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), Lucknow, utilizing CRISPR-Cas9 technology to study MYB2 gene knockout mutants. This experience provided her with hands-on expertise in genome editing and plant molecular research. Subsequently, she worked as a Young Professional at the Uttarakhand Council for Biotechnology (UCB), Pantnagar, under the Uttarakhand State Government. Her work involved phytochemical analysis of Himalayan spices, deepening their interest in the biochemical and ecological aspects of native plant species. Currently, she is serving as a Project Assistant at the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) under the NMCG-supported Jalaj project. With a deep interest in both flora and fauna, her transition from molecular biology to applied ecology reflects a commitment to interdisciplinary conservation. She aims to integrate laboratory-based expertise with field-based ecological work to support holistic biodiversity conservation strategies.

Bappadittya Mistri is from Pakhirala village, in the South Twenty-Four Parganas district of West Bengal. He completed his schooling at Rangabelia High School and then earned his bachelor's degree from Calcutta University. He was hired by Gosaba Green College under Ramkrishna Mission Narendrapur as a computer teacher, where he worked for six months. Then he joined as a data entry operator at the Sajnekhali Range office under the Sundarban Tiger Reserve. He founded a trust in the Sundarbans named the "SRINDHYA" Foundation, which protects fishermen from tiger and crocodile attacks. He also founded "KALRAB," a free school for the children of Sundarbans fishermen's families. Currently, he is working as an Assistant Coordinator for the "JALAJ project" at the Wildlife Institute of India in Dehradun, Uttarakhand."

Sakshi Negi was born and brought up in Dehradun. She completed her Bachelor's in Commerce from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in 2023. During her studies, she interned at Nanak Narang & Co. under a Chartered Accountant, gaining valuable experience in tax filing and developing a strong understanding of financial principles and practices. Currently, she is pursuing a Master of Business Administration from Subharti University, Meerut. She also volunteered as a Field Assistant with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) for the ‘Biodiversity Conservation and Ganga Rejuvenation’ project. Presently, she is working as a Project Assistant in the Jalaj Project."

Saurabh Rawat is a passionate professional with a unique blend of expertise in information technology, administration, financial accounting, hardware and networking, and desktop publishing (DTP). He holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from ITM College, affiliated with Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University (HNBGU). He also gained a strong foundation in financial accounting from ICDT Computers and completed a Desktop Publishing (DTP) course from Delite Engineering School, further enhancing his technical skills. Saurabh began his career at Lintek Lighting, where he worked as an Admin Executive for two years. In this role, he managed a variety of administrative and back-office operations, gaining valuable experience in organizational efficiency and day-to-day business functions. He then expanded his technical knowledge with a year of hands-on experience in hardware and networking, deepening his understanding of IT infrastructure. Subsequently, he joined the KalaHanu Group, a Channel Partner of Procter & Gamble (P&G), as part of their IDSS team, where he played an active role in key business reviews and helped ensure operational alignment with strategic goals. This role strengthened his analytical and strategic thinking in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Currently, Saurabh serves as a Project Assistant (Database) with the Jalaj Project at the Wildlife Institute of India. In this capacity, he manages and organizes essential project data, ensuring smooth operations and contributing to the achievement of project objectives. Throughout his professional journey, Saurabh has earned a reputation for his strong organizational, financial, and problem-solving abilities. He remains driven by a desire to take on new challenges and continually evolve in his field.

Nidhi Mishra hails from City of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. She is a nurturing Environment Enthusiast. She had pursued Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology and her Master's in Environmental Science with Specialization in Solid Waste Management from CSIR-CIMAP in Lucknow. During her Master's she had volunteered for Clean and Green Environment Society. After pursuing a Master's degree, she got shortlisted for a training program on Geospatial techniques in Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. She also had worked as an Environmental Educator and naturalist in Varanasi. In 2023 She was been shortlisted for a GSD Program in Paralegal Practices and forest policy acts, program Sponsored by MOEFCC in WII-EIACP Cell. Additionally, during her bachelor's she also became a part of an International Conference. Presently She is working as a Project Associate-l in the NMCG-Jalaj project.

Ms. Heera Devi belongs to Champawat district of Uttarakhand. She completed her master's degree in Sociology. She has more than 13 years of experience on working for women empowerment. Her past experience in the community-based programmes has been her major driving force and motivation for joining the Wildlife Institute of India, as a Jalaj Assistant Coordinator in the Jalaj project. In the project she is majorly involved with grass root community including women, youth and children. She is stiving to link traditional regional craft to conservation initiatives under the project.

Prakash Singh completed his MA in History from HNBGU and worked with Pragya International on biodiversity, medicinal and aromatic plants, rehabilitation, education, and health projects. As a village head, he collaborated with the Forest Department on plantations, water conservation, and environmental protection. Trained in bird watching, he guided tourists in identifying over 100 migratory and Himalayan birds in Joshimath. As a Ganga Prahari and later as a field assistant with NMCG, he raised awareness in villages along the Alaknanda River. Currently, he is working as Assistant Coordinator for the Jalaj project. He has conducted millet training sessions to help women become self-reliant and provides bird-watching training to local tourists. He educates people about the Alaknanda River's biodiversity and is creating a platform to sell local products through Jalaj.

Jaya Negi has extensive experience in social work, including 2.5 years as a social worker with Mahila Samakhya and 6 months as an ASHA worker. She worked for 1 year on the SWE Jal Pariyojna and has been involved in millet work since 2022, a project launched by Hon. Chief Minister Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami at Almora by HILANS. Additionally, she has 1 year of fieldwork experience with CHESTa Vikas Kalyan Samiti in Jolycot, Nainital. Since August 2023, she has been engaged in fieldwork as a Ganga Prahari, and from January 8, 2024, she is serving as a Jalaj Assistant Coordinator.

Radhika Chauhan is from Panjiala, Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, and completed her post-graduation from Uttarakhand Open University in 2021. She first worked as a volunteer with Nehru Yuva Kendra, Uttarkashi, from May 1, 2017, to July 2018, focusing on raising awareness to keep the Ganga clean. In 2018, she joined the Wildlife Institute of India as a Ganga Prahari, learning about the Namami Gange project. From March 2020 to December 2023, she served as a field assistant, working on community mobilization, livelihood development, awareness and plantation drives, workshops with women and youth and promoting Ganga conservation and biodiversity. Since January 2024, she has been working on the Jalaj project, focusing on connecting women with livelihoods. She manages two Jalaj centres: Jalaj Ali, where women create products using local resources, and Jalaj Anand Ganga, a homestay offering tourists meals made from local grains. She also raises awareness about the Ganga project and Jalaj initiatives.

Mr. Brijesh Kumar Maurya belongs to Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in Geography from the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith University.  Since his childhood, he has been passionate about wildlife conservation, which led him to join WII, as a field assistant at the Kachua Punarvas Kendra, Sarnath. At this center he was involved in handling of freshwater turtle; assisting in ecological surveys and rescue operations. Presently, he has joined the Wildlife Institute of India as a Jalaj Assistant Coordinator under the Jalaj project.

Ishu Verma is from Sarnath, Varanasi, and has been associated with the Wildlife Institute of India for the past six years. From 2017 to 2023, he worked as a Field Assistant at the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre in Sarnath, where he learned to handle and rescue turtles and other animals. Participating in awareness programs expanded his understanding of the importance of wildlife in the environment, which he shared with his community, leading to a change in how they treat animals. Since December 2023, he has been working as a Jalaj Assistant Coordinator, providing various training programs to make the people living along the Ganga self-reliant. He and his team work to spread the objectives of the Wildlife Institute of India, involving schools, the forest department, and the local community to raise awareness about the endangered species of the Ganga River. He completed his 10th and 12th from the UP Board and holds a BA and PG from Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith University.

Rama Tiwari is from Mehndipur village in Sadar Block, Kannauj district, near the Ganga River. After completing high school, Rama studied at K.C. Inters College in Kannauj and actively participated in the Swachh Bharat Mission, contributing significantly to toilet construction projects and gaining recognition from the District Magistrate. In 2017, Rama joined the Wildlife Institute of India as a Ganga Prahari. She led a team in Kannauj, organizing Ganga cleanliness and biodiversity awareness campaigns, which were acknowledged by prior Jal Shakti Minister Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Rama played a crucial role in achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status for their village and was elected President of the Mahila Mangal Dal in 2020, contributing to various social activities and awareness programs. In recognition of her efforts, Rama received the Vivekananda Youth Award in 2021. Currently, Rama works as an Assistant Coordinator under the Jalaj project at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun.

Hailing from Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya, Neeraj kumar completed his graduation from Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Awadh University in 2015. He has been actively involved in a team dedicated to conserving native trees and plants, as well as raising awareness among people about the importance of conservation for human life and the environment. In 2022, Neeraj was chosen as a Ganga Prahari at the Wildlife Institute of India. He underwent extensive training, including learning to make pickles, fruit jam, and juices. Recognizing his dedication, Neeraj was promoted and appointed as a Field Assistant. His responsibilities included organizing awareness campaigns, cleanliness drives, tree plantation initiatives, and awareness games, all aimed at sensitizing local community. As a Field Assistant, Neeraj gained valuable insights into the river Ganga and its associated communities. Prior to this, he had limited knowledge about them. His dedication and hard work led to further promotion, and he became the Jalaj Assistant Coordinator at the Wildlife Institute of India.

Chandra Kumar completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in Sanskrit from Young Christian College, Prayagraj, and Allahabad University, respectively, and earned an Acharya degree in Sanskrit education. He was elected President of the Fishermen's Association and has had a lifelong connection with rivers, inheriting fishing and boat navigation as his ancestral profession. In 2018, he joined the Wildlife Institute of India as a Ganga Prahar, focusing on conserving aquatic species like dolphins, gharials, mugger crocodiles, and turtles. Recognizing his dedication, he was appointed as a Field Assistant in 2020, diligently following directives from the WII. His exemplary work led to his current role as Jalaj Assistant Coordinator under the Jalaj Project, focusing on guiding the local team and empowering women through self-reliance initiatives.

Based in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, Shubham Katiyar completed his high school education in 2011 and his intermediate studies in 2013. In 2017, he graduated with a degree in physics and mathematics from Kanpur University. He joined the Namami Gange project in 2018, actively participating in programs aimed at conserving aquatic life and keeping the Ganga clean. In 2019, for a whole year, he gets associated with an organization working on children's vaccination and hygiene. He also worked as a sales officer at HDB Financial Services. Currently, he is working as a Jalaj Assistant Coordinator for the Jalaj project initiated by Namami Gange in Farrukhabad district.

Originally from Bisalpur, Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his graduation in Zoology, Botany, and Chemistry from Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, and earned his Master of Science in Zoology (Entomology) from the same university. During his master’s degree, he participated in various conferences. Driven by a desire to contribute to the conservation of the Ganga River basin and its aquatic biodiversity, he joined the Ganga Project as a Ganga Prahari, focusing on the conservation of the Gomti River and its aquatic biodiversity. In this role, he conducted workshops, awareness activities, plantation drives, cleanliness drives, and other initiatives related to the cleanliness of the Gomti River and the conservation of its aquatic flora and fauna. He worked as a field assistant with WII-NMCG at the Pilibhit Field Station for one year. Following this, he was selected as a Jalaj Assistant Coordinator in the WII NMCG-JALAJ Project. Currently, he is fulfilling his responsibilities in the JALAJ Project, working towards the conservation of the Ganga River basin and its aquatic biodiversity.

Deepak Kumar is originally from Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Law and a Master's degree in Arts from Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur. Driven by a passion for nature conservation, Deepak has been actively working with local communities since 2017. He began his journey as a Field Assistant at the Anubhuti Interpretation Centre in Kanpur Zoo, where he conducted sensitization programs to raise awareness about river conservation and freshwater species among visitors. Currently, he serves as a Jalaj Assistant Coordinator under the Jalaj project at the Wildlife Institute of India, contributing to community-driven river conservation efforts.

Rahul Kumar Nishad completed his Master's in Sociology from Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi, and joined the Swachh Bharat Mission as a Swachhagrahis in 2017 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister. He actively participated in training community members on sanitation and hygiene. Later, through the Wildlife Institute of India, he became a Ganga Prahari, promoting the conservation of the Ganga and its aquatic life. He contributed to community awareness programs such as tree plantation, cleanliness drives and environmental rallies. His work led to a position as a Field Assistant in the Namami Gange project, which aims to improve local livelihoods and self-reliance through various training programs. Currently, he is dedicatedly working as Project Assistant under the Jalaj Project.

Deepak Sahani is a resident of Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. His initial education was done in Gorakhpur itself and he studied till graduation from Deendayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University in the subjects of history, geography, political science etc. He was associated with the Janani Forest Animals Welfare Trust NGO for 2 years in the conservation of rivers, plantation, and awareness activities. He later joined the Wildlife Institute of India as a Ganga Prahari under the Namami Gange project for more than 1 year to raise awareness about aquatic creatures in schools, colleges, and local communities, and then as a field assistant in NMCG-WII. Currently, he is working as Project Assistant under the Jalaj Project.

Mr. Mayank Kumar Ojha belongs to Sahibganj district, Jharkhand. He completed his graduation and post-graduation in computer application. He undertook a course under the Jal Fellowship Course from Rishihood University, Sonipat, in Water Management System. During the course he understood the value of water and water resources in sustaining human life. He volunteered as a Ganga Prahari in the project biodiversity conservation and Ganga rejuvenation. Presently, he is working as an Assistant Coordinator with the Wildlife Institute of India, under the Jalaj project.

Rahul Kumar Raj is from Bhagalpur district in Bihar and completed his Master's degree from the Department of Ambedkar Thought and Social Work at Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University. He has worked as a volunteer at the Nehru Yuva Kendra, focusing on rural youth. Additionally, he has received training from the Disaster Management Department as a Disaster Friend and has organized awareness programs to educate people about disaster prevention. Under the aegis of the Agriculture Skill Council of India and ATMA Bhagalpur, he has received training as an Agricultural Extension Provider, raising awareness among farmers about organic farming, natural farming, and vermicomposting. He has also received training as a bird guide from the Bhagalpur Forest Division. Moreover, he has voluntarily worked with the Wildlife Institute of India as a Ganga Prahari, contributing to biodiversity conservation and the Ganga rejuvenation project. Currently, he is working as an Assistant Coordinator at the Wildlife Institute of India under the Jalaj project.

Kunal Kumar Singh was born on December 5, 1996, in a traditional home near the banks of the Ganga River in Dharani Patti, Purvi Rasalpur, Thana: Mohanpur, Samastipur district. He has seen and understood the Ganga since childhood. He completed his graduation from Lalit Narayan Mithila University under J.M.R.D. College, Mohanpur. He has been teaching children continuously for 10 years, having also established his own private school from nursery to eighth grade. Since 2017, he has been associated with the Wildlife Institute of India as a Ganga Prahari, working on cleanliness and biodiversity conservation of the Ganga River. Currently, he is working as an Assistant Coordinator at the Wildlife Institute of India under the Jalaj project.

Barun Kumar Mandal hails from Sahibganj district in Jharkhand state. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the history department at Sahibganj College under Sidho Kanho Murmu University, Dumka. He pursued a course in water management systems under the Jal Fellowship Program at Maharishi Dayanand University, Sonipat. In 2019, he joined the Wildlife Institute of India as a Ganga Prahari in order to contribute to environmental conservation. After joining the Wildlife Institute of India, he contributed for 3 years as a Ganga Prahari, for the protection of the Ganges River and its aquatic life. Recognizing his work, he was appointed as a Field Assistant for his responsibilities in the field. He diligently fulfilled his duties as a Field Assistant for 2 years. Currently, he is actively engaged as a Jalaj Assistant Coordinator in the Jalaj Project.

Mr. Ratan Halder belongs to Farakka town, Murshidabad District, West Bengal. He completed his Master's degree from Burdwan University. His active participation and experience in community service, aided him for being chosen as a field assistant for community mobilization and awareness activities along the Ganga River in Farakka, with the Wildlife Institute of India. Presently, he is working as a Jalaj assistant coordinator in the NMCG-WII, Jalaj Project. His field work includes coordination of Jalaj project activities with stakeholders including local communities, students and line agencies, to undertake awareness campaigns on the conservation of aquatic species and link local handicrafts to conservation initiatives and engagement of women groups with Jalaj centers.

Mr. Mangal Chowdhury belongs to Nayachar village in Nadia district West Bengal. He completed his bachelor's degree in the Bengali language from Netaji Subhas Open University, Katwa, Nadia. He has been associated with WII as field assistant since 2017 and has received trainings from the institute on rescue of aquatic species and ecological survey. His field work included organising awareness programmes on conservation of aquatic species of the Ganga River basin and community mobilisation. Mr. Soumen Dutta was born and brought up in a small village Bethuadahari, in Nadia district, West Bengal near the Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary. Living around this protected area was his major driving force to contribute for conservation of natural resources. Mr. Sourav Kar hails from the mangroves of India-the Sunderbans, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. He did his Bachelor of Science from Calcutta University. After his graduation, he worked with the Wildlife Institute of India as a field assistant. This experience helped him in knowing the importance of aquatic biodiversity for human well-being. He has great interest in illustration & painting and finds interest in portraying nature and natural beings. Ms. Suparna Kayal belongs to Diamond Harbour, 24 Praganas (South) West Bengal. After completing her postgraduate in History from the Rabindra Bharti University, she joined a local NGO- the Kankura Masat Social Welfare Society (Kankura Masat) at Diamond Harbour.
