Rajiv Gandhi (Nagarhole) National Park

Salient findings
The ecological profile of the PA has commanded considerable significance for conservation. The PA has received substantial, administrative, financial and research inputs as part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and as an important area under Project Elephant. A large information base available had the advantage of providing a strong support in the PA Management Planning. The PA Management Plan is comprehensive in its coverage of existing threats that need to be addressed for habitat management. Some efforts in this direction have already been taken and other more general actions are in progress.
The implementation of IEP in this PA came subsequent to major intervention already made to arrest the habitat degradation impacts of tribal (Hadi) settlements within PA. Till date, the relocation of 205 tribal families (out of 1850 families) outside PA in Reserve Forest has already been accomplished under Beneficiary Oriented Tribal Development. The impacts of relocation of these tribals in the Reserved Forest outside the PA will take some time to manifest as this initiative has only been recently undertaken. The shifts in dependencies of relocated people in forest outside PA is likely to have some direct bearing on the outcome of ecodevelopment activities proposed under IEP. The shrunken resources base outside PA supported the people relocated under BODT may not be able to sustain the needs of a much enlarged dependent community emerging with the implementation of IEP. The evaluation of the benefits and impacts of the activities under IEP is therefore need to be tackled by a more focused study.
