Preface

Environmental security and developmental progress are perceived as necessary requisites for sustained economic growth of any country or state. This obviously places greater onus on planners and investors to choose technologically sound, ecologically feasible and environmentally compatible options and alternatives for the maximization of economic benefits. Environmental Impact Assessment is a valuable tool that can help in forecasting of impacts fairly early in the Projects lifecycle. The incorporation of environmental concerns in the development planning and subsequent phases of construction and implementation of project can then be effectively achieved by good mitigatory approaches. This report is an outcome of an ecological assessment of the proposed Teesta Hydroelectric Project, Stage - V on flora and fauna undertaken by Wildlife Institute of India on the request of National Hydro-Power Corporation Ltd. (NHPC). I hope this document will serve its purpose well in providing the requisite information on the nature and magnitude of the project impacts and the appropriate environmental safeguards to be incorporated in planning, construction, and implementation phases of the proposed hydroelectric project.
