As mentioned even earlier, EIA is a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of the varied developmental activities on the different components of environment.
The EIA of DGB pipeline project provides an evaluation of the impacts of pipeline laying on wildlife values of wetlands.
4.1 WETLANDS Considering the importance of significant role of wetlands in the ecology of any given area, parameters viz., wetland type, size, seasonality and floral and faunal richness have been taken in to consideration in order to visualize the likely impacts upon the wetland habitats enroute the proposed pipeline.
4.1.1 Dhadhar river The Dhadhar river supports Indian Flap Shelled Turtle (Lissemys punctata) and the endangered Marsh Crocodile (Crocodilus palustris), the former is not an endemic species and is very common throughout Gujarat whereas the latter is not a resident species.TheMarsh Crocodile is reported to be present in this river only during monsoon due to its movement into this area from upstream.Assuming that the construction activities of pipeline will not be carried out in monsoon, this endangered species will not be affected by the construction phase activities of the proposed project. The five bird species recorded in this area are common and have wide range of distribution (Table 3.3).No migratory bird species have been reported to occur in this river. Due to the above mentioned reasons, the proposed pipeline project will not have significant impacts on wildlife values of the river.
4.1.2 Aladar and Chanchwel Creeks Both the creeks are influenced by the tidal water. Only two species of fishes, one species of amphibian and five species of birds have been recorded in these creeks. In addition to this, the ongoing drilling activities of O.N.G.C. in this region is causing disturbance in this area.It is anticipated that the already low wildlife values that have been a result of several ongoing disturbances associated with the ONGC projects will not be impacted upon by additional and more significant impacts from the proposed pipeline project.
