As a representative sample, certain villages falling in the proposed mine lease area and villages bordering Bandli Wildlife Sanctuary and Tarambri Protected Forest were surveyed (Fig. 5).

Informal interviews were conducted with villagers to assess existing resource use patterns and the likely increase in pressures in the post project scenario (Plate 2). The interviews were aimed primarily at determining:

• human population size
   

• livestock population size
   

• fuel and fodder requirement
   

• level of resource dependence on the thrust areas
