Tarambri Demarcated Protected Forest

back

Tarambri Demarcated Protected Forest is situated at the northern end of the proposed mining area (Fig. 8). It shares its boundary with Bhakra-Beas Management Board (BBMB) colony of Sundernagar town, the Forest Training School and with fields of Keran and Mulakh Maidan villages.

This area of 204.98 ha was closed off to human intervention by barbed wire fencing in 1991 by the Forest Department and was designated as a Nature Awareness Centre. With the objective of affording increased protection to the wildlife habitats within the degraded forests and to enhance the conservation value of such habitats, the surrounding villages are restrained from using Tarambri DPF for fuel, fodder and grass cutting. The restorative efforts and added protection measures are gradually improving the habitat potential of the area which is sparingly being used by a small population of carnivores and herbivores such as leopard, jungle cat, goral and wild pig and species of birds particularly pheasants and partridges.
