The fact that the proposed project involves expansion and upgradation of an existing industry and has financial implications of over 50 crores, the environmental assessment is a statutory requirement under EIA Notification (MoE&F, 1994). The process of impact assessment is based on a straight forward technique of relating the sources of stress (the proposed project) to the ecological receptors identified within the project area and determining the likely implications of such a relationship on characteristic of ecosystem components and more specifically the valued ecosystems. The key characteristics of the project and the ecosystem components that have been considered in the ecological impact assessment are presented in Fig. 7.
