Road-Kills, Obstruction of Movement and Poaching

One of the direct impacts of road improvement is likely to emanate from the increase in traffic on the NGT road. The traffic projections for the NGT road indicate a substantial increase in the Passenger Car Units (PCU) from 2065 per day in 1997 to 4884 in 2010, just in the Giddalur-Nandyal section (Kirloskar, 1997). This could lead to (1) increased incidences of animals being hit and killed by vehicles; (2) obstruction in the movement of wild animals; (3) restriction in use of adjacent habitats separated by the NGT road; and (4) increased probability of poaching and illegal exploitation of resources by road users. |
