One of the direct impacts of road improvement is likely to emanate from the increase in traffic on the NGT road. The traffic projections for the NGT road indicate a substantial increase in the Passenger Car Units (PCU) from 2065 per day in 1997 to 4884 in 2010, just in the Giddalur-Nandyal section (Kirloskar, 1997). This could lead to (1) increased incidences of animals being hit and killed by vehicles; (2) obstruction in the movement of wild animals; (3) restriction in use of adjacent habitats separated by the NGT road; and (4) increased probability of poaching and illegal exploitation of resources by road users.
