Primary Impacts of Aquatic Ecosystem

back

1. Gharial residing within 1 km from the proposed route will face severe disturbances associated with transport of material and equipment and the construction activities themselves.

2. A new nesting site for gharial which is coming up within a 200 m distance from the point where the pipeline will cross the river will be disrupted leading to the displacement of atleast 5 adult gharials. This will increase conspecific conflict which will eventually disrupt other nesting sites i n the area.

3. Movements of gharial, gangetic dolphin and otter will be disrupted temporarily during the construction phase of the project.

4. There is a possibility that all species of turtles found in the area will lose their nesting sites in the particular stretch atleast during the construction phase.

5. No major alteration in the habitat quality is visualized if Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) technique is used for river crossing. However, if open cut method is used it will have a bearing on habitat quality due to temporary blockade in water flow and construction of coffer dams along the river.

6. No serious impacts on the riparian or aquatic vegetation community is expected to occur.
