Five to six thousand birds are estimated to use this wetland during the month of March each year. During spot checking, 47 species of birds were identified. Of these, 40 species were reported to be migrants. This being the time when most of the winter migrants have already left the area, the approximate number at the lake was not an accurate representation of the wetland habitat's use by winter migrants. The forest officials and the water fowl census report of the past years provide an estimate of 15- 20000 water birds (belonging to 78 species) actually using this wetland during winter (November to March). The importance of Ramsagar as a landing ground for migratory species will certainly have to be considered during the evaluation of environmental impacts of HBJ Pipeline Upgradation Project.
