Terrestrial Wildlife Habitats

The terrestrial wildlife habitats within the study area are represented by Kakoijana, Nakatti and Bhumeshwar Reserved Forests of the Aie Valley Forest Division. The details of the Reserved Forest Patches which fall within the study area are provided in Table 5. Table 5. Reserved Forest Area Represented in the Study Zone
All the Reserved Forests listed above are a part of the sub - montane tract known as Bhabhar area. The soil over most of this area is dry sandy loam superimposed ofn beds of pebbles with very thin layer of humus. The vegetation of these forests correespons with the category 'Eastern Terai Sal type 3C/C1C descrbed by Champion and Seth (1968). The floristics of this zone as per the classification of Champion & Seth (1968) is summarized below.
Historically, the forests of the Aie Valley Division have been a home for diverse species of wildlife represented by some of the highly endemic and endangered species of the area (Appendix - I). During the course of the survey however, not many species could be sighted in these forests. This fact could be attributed to a great extent to the large scale biotic pressures, and the rampant incidences of fire and insurgency in the area that have led to widespread implications on the overall integrity of the forested habitats. |
