Perceived merits of proposed Mumbai-Pune Expressway

back
The statistics given in Table 3 provide an insight of the traffic related impacts of the existing highway NH-4. The proposed expressway is being perceived as a means to reduce the accident rate.

The proposed expressway is expected to lead to a considerable reduction in the total projected traffic (passenger and freight) on the existing Mumbai-Pune road corridor NH-4 by being a recipient artery for the divertible traffic of NH-4 (Table 4).

Year  Existing traffic Projected traffic Divertible traffic
Car Bus Truck Car Bus Truck Car Bus Truck
1997 9569 3227 13435
2000       13314 4700 17123 5586 1591 11410

Based on the base year’s freight and passenger traffic count, projections of total normal traffic upto the year 2015 on Mumbai-Pune corridor and the projections of the divertible traffic to the proposed expressway do offer plausible arguments for justifying the proposed expressway project.

Apart from this, there is also a projected increase in the container traffic (Table 5) on the proposed expressway as Pune has been identified as a prospective inland container depot.

Table 5. Container traffic (in tonnes) projections

 Trade 1994 - 1995 1999 - 2000
 Import 84323 105341
 Export 152874 187761
 Total 237197 293102

The total freight traffic (34285 tonnes/day) is also likely to increase in the same proportions.
