Perceived merits of proposed Mumbai-Pune Expressway

The statistics given in Table 3 provide an insight of the traffic related impacts of the existing highway NH-4. The proposed expressway is being perceived as a means to reduce the accident rate.
Table 3. Number of accidents and persons killed and injured during 1990 - 1995
(Source: MID-DAY, Friday, November 15, 1996 and MSRDC) The proposed expressway is expected to lead to a considerable reduction in the total projected traffic (passenger and freight) on the existing Mumbai-Pune road corridor NH-4 by being a recipient artery for the divertible traffic of NH-4 (Table 4).
(Source: Final Report, RITES and Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick, 1995) Based on the base year’s freight and passenger traffic count, projections of total normal traffic upto the year 2015 on Mumbai-Pune corridor and the projections of the divertible traffic to the proposed expressway do offer plausible arguments for justifying the proposed expressway project. Apart from this, there is also a projected increase in the container traffic (Table 5) on the proposed expressway as Pune has been identified as a prospective inland container depot. Table 5. Container traffic (in tonnes) projections
(Source: Final Report, RITES and Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick, 1995) The total freight traffic (34285 tonnes/day) is also likely to increase in the same proportions. |
