The Western Ghats are unique in being the repository of gene pool and the cradle of evolution of new taxa. There are some unique characteristics of the flora of Western Ghats. Besides occurrence of typical families of tropics, there are species of Australian families, families typical of tidal creeks, and species of Himalaya (Jayaraman and Shanmugasundram, 1991).
