Environmental Review of Activities Undertaken for Habitat Improvement and Management under IEP in Palamau Tiger Reserve

S.No. Project Activity PA & Local Benefits Impact Mitigation Measures/ Recommendations
1 Lantana eradication (Nav Bandh, Balahi Kusum)
  • More grass/fodder for wild herbivore

  • Increased visibility

  • Better sighting opportunities
  • Weed like Lantana provide good cover and flowers and seeds are source of food for birds

  • Uprooted Lantana left on ground may reestablish
  • Uprooted Lantana to be removed and given to local people for use as fuel.

  • Removal should be in phases to not completely replace its habitat values

  • Study on impact of weeding out Lantana on birds and animal species would be interesting to determine food and the cover value of Lantana and future management strategies
2 Repair of forest roads
  • Improved mobility for protection and management
  • Minor disturbances during repairing operation

  • Provide illegal access for resource extraction
  • Improved mobility for patrolling will enforce stricter monitoring for control of offence
3 Construction of causeways (Balahi kusum)
  • Mobility during rains for protection
  • Disturbance during construction

  • Flow of water may be restricted due to improper design

  • Restricted animal movements without development of under passages for small to medium sized animal movement
  • Evaluate design of causeways to ensure flow of water.

  • Evaluate gradient suitability for unobstructed water flow and effectiveness for animal passage for subsequent causeway construction
4 Elephant proof trenches
  • Reduction in man animal conflict

  • Employment generation
  • Temporary disturbance at site and soil erosion

  • Restricted animal movement due to fragmentation for smaller burrowing species

  • Likely risks of accidental falls
  • Monitoring for its effectiveness and vigil for preventing accidental falls
5 Fire watch towers
  • Facilitates detection, prevention and control of fire hazards in PA
  • Minor disturbance during construction

  • Visual and aesthetic impact due to installation of such physical structure
  • Since sites are determined based on optimization of location and benefits, camouflaging may be the only option
6 Construction of check dams
  • Moisture conservation

  • Availability of water during summer

  • Retention of silt

  • Improved habitat conditions for wildlife
  • Change in micro climate

  • Disturbance to the water course and likely subsequent downstream impacts
  • Cost benefits analysis of large sized structures need careful analysis for financial and ecological sustainability

  • Ensure small construction and suitable design
