The total area required for implementation of the Omkareshwar Project falls in three districts of Madhypa Pradesh- Khandwa, Khargone and Dewas. The largest   requirement of clear felling of forest area (5756.76) is obviously in the area of reservoir of the proposed project. Forest area is also required to be cleared for the construction of power house, dam seat, and magazine area, canal alignment and quarrying for material for construction and land leveling. The details of the forest area required to be clear felled for defined purposes under the  project are presented inTable 2.

From the  project layout  and the details of  landuse in the  project area provided by NVDA, the district wise break up of the total  forest area required for the project  establishes that the  largest area  (4311.11 ha) would be required to be clear felled in District Khandwa. The area under submergence comprises the forest area under all the three districts of  Khandwa (4238.02 ha ), Khargone (153.53 ha)  and Dewas (885.45 ha) while the requirement of forest for other peripheral construction work for quarry, power house, canal  and colonies is restricted to only forest divisions of Khandwa district (Table 3).
