Background of the proposed project

The Site Selection Committee for setting up of a Nuclear Power Station in Andhra Pradesh visited Andhra Pradesh in the year 1962 under the Chairmanship of Shri M. Hayath, Ex-Chairman, CW&PC and collected data for six sites located in Nellore and Mahaboobnagar District.
Subsequently, discussions related to the selection of site continued between the Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Government of India during the years 1962 to 1971.
During June 1971, the Site Selection Committee constituted by Atomic Energy Commission headed by its Chairman Shri M.N. Chakravarthy, Adviser (Power) again visited Srisailam on 25.06.1971 for selecting a suitable site for locating Nuclear Power Station. Different sites around Srisailam, along with Kothapatnam site in Visakahapatnam and Marrigudem site in East Godavari District were considered. These three sites went into the back ground because of their certain unfavourable characteristics.
The then Union Minister for Power, Dr. K.L. Rao suggested to go in for a fourth site near Nagarjunasagar Left Canal Head Regulator and accordingly further field investigations were taken up. The Chairman, Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board (APSEB) in May, 1973 requested the Chairman, Site Selection Committee and the Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission to recommend the Nagarjunasagar site for the establishment of Nuclear Power Station.
