Mizoram attained Statehood on 20.2.1987 after the signing of the historic memorandum of settlement on 30.6.1986. Ever since then, there have been rapid developmental strides to make up for the lost past.

Although, considerable progress in development has been made since then in all the sectors, including utilities like urban water and power supply, irrigation, road transport, rural development and industries like tourism and handicrafts, yet, the State continues to lag behind in economic progress. Channels for trade particularly for export of natural and handicraft products that can provide a major share in the economy of the State are almost non existent.

The Central Govt. granted the sanction for the construction of an airport at Lengpui. The proposed Lengpui Domestic Airport is likely to be completed by February 1998 and is expected to fulfil the long cherished aspiration of the people of Mizoram.
