Climate

back

Mizoram enjoys a tropical climate with three distinct seasons (Pachuau, 1994). The summer temperature varies from 20oC to 30oC and the winter temperature from 8oC to 18oC. The low lying areas are moist and the higher regions are pleasantly cool and ideal. This is one of the reasons why the Mizos prefer to live at the top of hills. Winter is dry and moderately cold whereas summer is warm and wet. Occurrence of frost is noticed only in the eastern sector that too during later part of December or early January. The annual precipitation varies from 1700 mm to 3900 mm. Rainfall is generally less in the north Mizoram and it increases gradually towards south. Violent storms are noticeable over hills in March, April and May and rainfall is heavy from June to September.
