Impacts on water quality

back

Deterioration in the quality of streams and rivulets would result from pollutants generated by activities on the airport. The likely sources of pollutants that are expected to find their way to fish ponds and rivers are surface runoffs, detergents used on apron, hydrocarbons resulting from fuel spillage, greases, waste oil and other organic compounds from repair and maintenance operations in the workshop and waste generation.

Discharge of polluted water from streams and rivulets into village fish ponds could impact upon the fish production and through it the income of the local people who are greatly dependent on fish resource. There is a proposal to provide fuel trap system at the discharge points from the apron and the turning pads to avoid water borne hydrocarbons entering into fish ponds. This would substantially lower the pollution load of the receiving water bodies.
