Dr. S.P.S. Kushwaha holds a doctoral degree from North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong. He did his post doctoral research on image texture application in forestry from Faculty of Forestry, University of Freiburg, Germany. He is presently heading the Forestry and Ecology Division at Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun. His areas of expertise include remote sensing and GIS applications in forestry and ecology; sustainable land and water resources development planning, forest resource inventory, wildlife habitat modeling and EIA.

His professional standing has been recognized by Govt. of India and other professional bodies. He has served as a member of the Task Force on Interlinking of Rivers, Ministry of Water Resources; Govt. of India Committee for Rural Development in North-East India and is a member of the Expert Committee for Environmental Appraisal of River Valley and Hydroelectric projects, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India.

He is a fellow of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Bonn; National Institute of Ecology, New Delhi and International Society of Tropical Ecology, Varansi. He is a life member of Indian Society of Remote Sensing, Dehradun; Indian National Cartographic Association, Hyderabad and Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad. He has published widely both national and international journals.
