Dr. G.V. Subrahmanyam holds a doctoral degree from Aligarh Muslim University. He joined the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Govt. of India in 1983 and since then has worked in various capacities in the Ministry. He is currently the Director in the Impact assessment Division of the Ministry. He has been actively involved in policy planning and coordination for environmental protection including promotion of research, pollution prevention and control. Some of the other major programmes of MoE&F in which he was actively involved include environment auditing, waste minimization, cleaner production in small scale industries, Environment Management Systems (EMS) for Indian Industry, National Action Plan (NAP) for pollution control and prevention, zoning atlas for siting of industries, preparation of urban environmental management plan, launching of eco-city project, green belt development and environmental improvement in selected cities and towns etc.

As a Member-Secretary of the Expert Committee for industry, he is involved in the appraisal of projects for environmental clearance under the EIA Notification, 1994 and in monitoring compliance of conditions of projects to which clearances have been granted.

He has made major contributions in bringing out the new EIA Notification dated 14th September, 2006 to make the environmental clearance process more efficient, transparent and de-centralized.
