Study Area

The Proposed Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary is located 30 km from Shivpuri on Sheopur road in Pohri Tehsil (7~ to 78° East and 25° to 26° North) of District Shivpuri, M.P 0 The total area of this proposed sanctuary is 250 km2 The entire area within this sanctuary comprises of grazing lands of the Revenue Department, collectively owned by the village panchayats. Interspersed in these grazing lands are extensive cultivation areas, more often around each of the 36 villages scattered within the sanctuary .The main crops include groundnut, wheat, gram, mustard and sugarcane. Jowar is also cultivated extensively along with mustard in some areas. The bustards are mainly seen in grazing patches on the plateaux near Dularo, Marora, Uncha Barod, Bilbara and Naraiya Kheri villages of the sanctuary .The dotted areas within the proposed sanctuary (Fig. 3.0) are the locations where sightings have been confirmed. To promote further protection to these areas, enclosures around these have been recommended in the proposal for upgradation of this area to a sanctuary (Ali and Rahmani 1984). The proposed HBJ gas pipeline will have its route through a 25.55 km sketch of this sanctuary. A 30 meter wide strip of land along this 25.55 km sketch of sanctuary will be acquired for trenching, pipeline transport, on-site welding, post construction operation, maintenance and monitoring. This would be nearly 0.003% of the total area under the GIB habitat. |
