Informal interviews of pastoralists and farmers

Initial information of wolf presence in an area was obtained by interactions and interviews of local people. The pastoral communities of Jats, Sodas, and Rabaries provided reliable information. Wolves prey primarily on small livestock and the poor pastoral communities suffered substantial losses to wolf predation. In retaliation people from these communities regularly track down wolf dens, smoke out the pups and kill them. Their assistance was sought in collecting information on recently located wolf dens, and on locations of recently killed livestock. A total of 23 man days were spent in the area collecting data from the field. An additional 30 man days were spent in laboratory analysis of wolf scats, data processing and analysis. |
