Quantification of indirect wildlife signs and direct sightings

back

Data were collected on tracks, scats, scraps and other wildlife signs (Plate 5) along three, 1 km long belt transects at each of the 3 proposed mining sites. Along the belt transects and during the general survey, all direct sightings of wildlife were recorded. Based on preliminary surveys, the Mata-no-Madh area showed greater wildlife values even with the ongoing initial mining activities. Therefore, within the buffer zone of Mata-no-Madh an additional three 1km X 2m belt transects were examined for wildlife signs. Special effort was invested in locating wolf dens and potential denning habitats within a radius of 10km at each of the proposed mining sites.
