Merits of nagarjunasagar site

Government of Andhra Pradesh has been impressing on the Government of India to locate one of its Nuclear Power Station at a site near Nagarjunasagar in Andhra Pradesh as it has all the unique features required for establishment of a Nuclear Power Station. The Site Selection Committee after inspection of number of sites, preferred the Nagarjunasagar site in view of its various merits like availability of water and land, hard foundation strata, communication facility, power grid and other infrastructural facilities.
Nagarjunasagar site was considered ideal because of the following specific reasons -
i. Remoteness from the populated areas.
ii. Existence of hard granite rock for foundations.
iii. Transport and communication facilities including air strip.
iv. Central location in the Power Grid.
v. Existence of 2 X 30 MW Hydel Power Units at site to serve as house sites for Nuclear Power Stations.
vi. Availability of fresh water for cooling.
vii. Availability of other infrastructural facilities.
viii. Availability of over 1700 MW of energy for uninterrupted power supply.
Over the last 20 years the following studies were conducted at the Nagarjunasagar Site.
i. Sub-soil investigations were conducted during the year 1985 and core samples collected and preserved.
ii. Seismic resistivity tests were also conducted as desired by the Nuclear Power Corporation during the year 1986.
iii. Meteorological data were collected by setting up a meteorological station for 3 years from 1987 to 1990.
iv. Based on the stipulations by the Forest Department, an area of 100.00 hectares was identified for compensatory afforestation in Nalgonda District.
